Switch it off and call us
- If there's smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 999.
- Otherwise, turn off the main switch at your fuse board.
- Don't touch the socket or switch, and don't turn the power back on.
- Ring us. We answer 24 hours a day.
Find out what's tripping it
- Unplug everything on the circuit that keeps tripping.
- Reset the switch that's down at your fuse board.
- Plug things back in one at a time. If it trips on one appliance, that appliance is probably the problem.
- If it trips with nothing plugged in, or won't reset at all, call us.
Check the fuse board, then the street
- Open your fuse board. If a switch is down, try putting it back up.
- If everything is up, check whether your neighbours have power.
- Whole street out? It's a power cut. Call 105 for your network operator.
- If a switch won't stay up, leave it off and call us.
Stop using it and isolate the circuit
- Unplug anything in it, but only if the plug isn't hot to the touch.
- Switch off that circuit at the fuse board. If you're not sure which one, use the main switch.
- Don't use extension leads to get around it.
- Call us and we'll make it safe the same day.
Start with the bulb, then book a check
- One light flickering? Try a new bulb, and check it's dimmable if it's on a dimmer.
- Lights dip when the kettle or shower goes on? Book an inspection.
- Flickering with buzzing, heat or a burning smell? Treat it as urgent and call us.
Check the RCD and the timer
- Outdoor circuits often have their own RCD. Check whether it's tripped.
- Check any timer, sensor or smart schedule on the lights.
- If it tripped after rain, water has probably got in. Leave it off and don't open wet fittings.
