Candle care
Look after it, and it'll look after you.
A few small habits double how long a candle lasts and keep the glass clean. Here's everything we tell our friends.
The first burn
The first light decides how it burns for ever.
Wax has a memory. If you blow it out before the melted pool reaches the edge, it'll tunnel down the middle every time after. Rule of thumb: an hour for every inch across.
Full melt poolEven and level, right to the glass.TunnellingBlown out too soon, so the edges never melt.
First burn calculator
Measure across the top of your candle.
Every time you light it
Six small habits.
Trim the wick to 5mmBefore every light, once the candle is cold. Wooden wicks to 3mm.
Burn for 2 to 4 hoursLong enough for a full pool, short enough that the wick doesn't mushroom.
Keep it out of draughtsDraughts make the flame flicker, smoke and burn unevenly.
Snuff, don't blowA snuffer or dipping the wick avoids smoke and splashed wax.
Stop with 1cm leftThe glass gets too hot after that. Time for a refill.
Never leave it aloneAway from children, pets, curtains and anything that can catch.
Something not right?
Pick what's happening and we'll tell you how to fix it.
When it's finished
Don't throw the glass away.
Freeze it
Pop the empty vessel in the freezer overnight and the last of the wax pops out in one piece.
Wash it
Warm soapy water, then use it for pens, cotton buds, herbs or a cutting from the garden.
Or refill it
Send it back and we'll pour it again for 35% less. How refills work
